“You adulterous people, don’t you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God? Therefore, anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. ” James 4:4
Why is everyone talking about homosexuality these days? It seems like everywhere you turn, there it is; on the television, on the internet, and in the papers. Why is it so popular? The answer is the following: We are in a battle, and homosexuality is a tool of the enemy.
If homosexuality isn’t a big deal to you, it should be, because it is a big deal to God. In the account of Creation (Genesis 1 &2), God creates mankind ‘male and female’, calls them ‘husband and wife’ and commands them to ‘be fruitful and multiply’. Marriage, sex, male, female and procreation: these are foundational principles of God’s creation and are therefore foundational principles for God’s church. The problem with homosexuality is that it is completely contrary to all of these. It is a sin that tries to destroy the very groundwork of God’s will for humanity. If someone decides to compromise this foundation of God’s Word, then many other compromises will follow. And that is exactly what the enemy (Satan) wants.
We live in a very scary day and age in this nation. Sin and worldliness have progressed exponentially as of late, to the point that homosexuality is legally and socially accepted. There is a ‘progressive’ movement in our culture. It isn’t aimed at the progression of morality, virtue, or life, but rather at freedom from God and His principles. The brick of evolution was one of the first building blocks in this movement. And homosexuality is one of, if not the, final brick in the wall. Our nation is progressing down the broad path that Jesus warned us about. And what is the church doing? Much of it is joining the progression.
Are you a ‘Biblical Christian’ or a ‘Cultural Christian’? A Biblical Christian is someone who holds to the unwavering principles of God’s word, despite the changing of their culture. A Cultural Christian is someone who agrees with the Bible, as long as, the worldly culture they live in also agrees. This is scary because it means that people care more about what the world thinks than what Jesus thinks. They are in essence ‘ashamed of His words’. What they fail to realize is that Jesus will therefore be ashamed of them (Mark 8:38). If you want to please the world and please God at the same time, then you have already failed at the onset.
So what is our response to such a situation and time as this? First of all, we must love homosexuals. They are made in God’s image, and are in desperate need of the truth. I have a few acquaintances that are homosexual. I love them, talk to them, and am available to help them if they are in need. But they know where I stand. I do not condone their behavior because I love them. Without truth, there is no love. The church must be careful to avoid the two extremes of homophobia on the one hand, and tolerance on the other. People who struggle with homosexuality need love, truth, and compassion. What they don’t need is allowance for behavior that they will regret on Judgment Day. We must truly love people while staying true to God and His word.
But as far as our response to such times, I personally don’t think that it has to do with getting out onto the streets as much as it has to do with being proactive in the church and home. This is where our battlefield lies. We must help our brothers and sisters in the church to not be swayed by the lies and compromises of society. We must help them stay true to the words of their King. In addition to this, and most importantly, we must help our children stay unmoved by the prodding of the world. This is a challenging task for this generation because much of the church and family is so integrated within the systems, values, and ideas of this world that they are, by default, sucked into it. We are plugged into the world’s opinions, and therefore, we follow along with its ideas. Media is a perfect example of this. Don’t you realize that every commercial, television show, and movie is an advertisement for worldliness? Every time your child watches something that condones homosexuality, it chips away their resolution for godliness. The world knows this and acts accordingly. This is why there are more and more commercials with same-sex couples. This is why nearly every television show and movie has at least one character that is homosexual. It is done on purpose, as a very deliberate and subversive plot against our youth. And we fall into it completely because of our love of entertainment.
I know of a Christian family who loved watching ‘American Idol’. One of their daughters, who was a very strong Christian, became infatuated with one of the contestants who was homosexual. Her allegiance to God’s word was chipped-away more and more until she pretty much walked away from the faith. She compromised the principle of homosexuality, and many other compromises followed. This is because sex, marriage, and male and female are foundational Genesis principles. Again, that is why the enemy is aiming for Genesis 1 and 2. His goal isn’t so much for people to be homosexual. That is only a means to his goal. His goal is for the rejection of Jesus Christ in the hearts of people. (There are some people who want the best of both worlds. They want to embrace homosexuality while embracing Christ. What they fail to realize is that the rejection of God’s principles is the rejection of His person. You can’t please the world and please God at the same time.)
Again, we must fight for the hearts of our children and God’s church. That is our battlefield. We must protect our children from the advertisements of the world, while teaching them the truth from God’s word. If we allow our children to be formed by our modern ‘progressive’ culture, then they will likely end up on the broad path along with the majority of the world. Don’t let your children fall victim to this world. If you aren’t proactive in developing their worldview, they will by default give in to the ways of this world.
Homosexuality is sin. (1 Corinthians 6:9) It is unnatural. (Romans 1:26-28) It is not from God. Don’t choose friendship with the world. Instead, choose friendship with God. Jesus said that if anyone is ashamed of Him and His words, that He would be ashamed of them. I am not ashamed of my King’s words.
If you choose to stay true to God’s word, the world will hate you. They will reject you, call you names, and maybe, someday in the future, take you to court or even try to kill you. Don’t let this bother you. You have Jesus. He is all that matters. Follow Him. Stay true to Him. He is better than all of the acceptance and love that this world has to offer.
“Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done.”
